(800 km.) east of the Philippines and 600 mi. (960 km.) north of Indonesia. Palau scuba diving is considered a paradise for underwater photographers and demanding divers together. This small nation is composed of 340 islands, most of them however, uninhabited. Its 930 mi. (1,500 km.) of coastline offer over 80 dive sites. It has coral islands fringed by barrier reefs.  Palau has one of the best collections of intact WWII shipwrecks and plane wrecks. A popular way to visit most of the Palau´s spots is via live aboards, especially the South West Islands. CLIMATE Palau has tropical climate year-round with an average temperature of 82°F (28 °C). The average surface water temperature is 70°F to 90°F (21°C to 32°C). The best time to dive is between November and May. KOROR, EPICENTER OF PALAU SCUBA DIVE Two-thirds of the people in Palau live in Koror and it´s where the better equipped operation are based. The majority of the dives in Palau consists of drifting, your boat will follow you along from the surface. Chandelier Cave stands out as a popular site, located in the Rock Islands, it´s a huge cave system close to Koror. Blue Corner is the site to swim along abundant pelagic life. This is an advanced dive with unpredictable strong currents. The strong currents and upwelling is what attracts a lot of the fish life here. You will have white tip and gray reef sharks swimming over your head at this site. Eagle rays and Napoleon wrasses are locals at this site. On the sandy channels of Blue Corner, dogtooth tuna, clown trigger-fish and king trigger fish. It is one of the most requested scubadive sites in Palau. The Amatsu Maru wreck, also known as Black Coral wreck is the biggest shipwreck in all of Micronesia and the deepest Japanese wreckage through Palau. The Amatsu Maru is 502 ft. long with a 66 ft. beam that was sunk in 1944. The Big Drop Off is suited for all divers, it´s a vertical wall that goes along the length of Ngemelis Island. Pyramid butterflyfish, square anthias and moorish idols are some of the resident reef fish. Blue striped clownfish with its anemones can be spotted and hawksbill turtles like to feed here. Usually you´ll see nurse sharks resting at the bottom. The Ngemelis Coral Garden is a great spot for macro fish and roughback batfish. Other WWII wrecks worthy of a visit are the Iro Maru and USS Perry sank as well in 1944. The USS Perry was not discovered until the year 2000. Ngedebus Corner is a great spot for gray reef and white tip sharks. Big parrotfish and Napoleon wrasses swim along too. SOUTH ISLANDS DIVING: MILLIONS OF FISH Helen Reef Reserve is a marine reserve located in the South Islands and one of the most prolific spots in the world. Literally, millions of fish live here. Tobi and Merir Island also in the South Islands are some of the best sites in the world. It is better to go to the South Islands by live-aboard or private yacht since they are about 600 km. south of the main islands in Palau. The Ocean Hunter lll is one of the live-aboards that includes this destination in their itinerary. The Eclipse and Safari are private yachts from Sam´s Tours that visit the islands too. Jellyfish Lake is a must once in Palau. Located on Eil Malk Island, part of the Rock Islands, the Jellyfish Lake is host to millions of golden jellyfish that migrate horizontally across the lake every day. These Jellyfish don´t have their usual powerful sting since they haven´t had to fight off predators being mainly isolated in the lake. They farm their own food supply of algae. Palau comprises the Palau Tropical Moist Forest terrestrial eco-region and it´s part of the Polynesia- Micronesia Biodiversity Hotspot.
