SCUBA DIVING IN REUNION ISLAND: Gourmet reef dives. Divers’ Reviews

Reunion, one of the 27 regions of France, has a coral reef extending along the coast assuring any diver excellent diving.

CLIMATE

The best time to visit is from May to November when the trade winds keep the temperature moderate. Heavy rainfall happens between December and April. The water temperature averages 80 °F (27°C) from January to March and 73°F (23 °C) from July to September.

SCUBA DIVES

Reunion Island is a French island about 200 km. west of Mauritius. The coral forms a reef of about 15 km. to the west and south of the island. Saint Gilles les Bains and Saint Leu, both in the west part of the island, are the best diving spots.

Saint Gilles les Bains is a small beach town with an array of bars and restaurants and the island’s prettiest white sand beach, Boucan Canot. Many diving operations are located here and they all focus mainly on the reefs. Pelagic fish are rare but small reef fish are abundant. Canyon is a good dive site, suitable for beginners. Passe de Trois Bassin is another site where you can wall dive.

The Navarra wreck is an exciting deep dive. The Navarra is a 150 ft. lobster boat that sank there.

Saint Leu is a world-renown surfing spot that also features splendid wall dives and reefs. At Pointe Au Sel you will have the opportunity to spot pelagic species. Maison Verte is a great coral garden with abundant marine life. Hammerhead sharks can be spotted between October and November.
