The Protected Marine Park of Portofino – Liguria, North Italian Coast – One the top scuba diving spot in Europe
Home to the most famous dive in the Mediterranean, Christ Of The Abyss, a giant bronze statue, originally submerged in honour of scuba diving pioneer, Dario Gonzatti who tested early scuba gear in its waters, the statue has acts as a monument to all those whose life is dedicated to the ocean.
The Protected Marine Park surrounds the Promontory of Portofino. The marine environment is one of the most bio-diverse & unique in the Mediterranean and the astounding beauty of this underwater landscape attracts thousands of divers & biologists from all over the world every year.
Because the marine park has been protected since 1998, there is a huge array of marine life, large and small and some are only found in this area. Spectacular walls & carpets of Red Coral, Violet Gorgonian & yellow Margherita del Mare. Barracuda, snappers, tuna & groupers are seen everyday. This is the home of the unique giant moon fish. Many small marine life including many types of violet, pink & white nudibranch.
Diving is perfect for beginners & more advanced divers. There are vertical walls for multi-level & deep dives. There are wrecks, caverns and amazing swimthrus
Dolphins are also found in this region, well known as “The Dolphin Sanctuary”. Diving is possible 12 months of the year. Optimum season April – October. Variety of accommodation available.
The whole region is also a protected natural park so there is no high rise development or tourist resorts. Beautiful region for walking & fabulous food – this is where Focaccia & Pesto were originally created. There is a rich natural & cultural heritage together with style & sophistication

When divers can enjoy the pristile water all year long but if you are looking for the whale shark, it’s better to plan your trip between October till April.
Humpack Whales migration follow the cost of Kenya between Jylu to October.
